Teak vs. Poly: Which Material Is Right for You?
The two most common materials for marine table tops are teak and high-density polyethylene (poly/Starboard):
- Teak offers a classic, warm aesthetic and natural resistance to moisture. It requires periodic oiling to maintain its appearance but is extremely durable and long-lasting.
- Poly (Starboard) is virtually maintenance-free, won't rot or splinter, and holds up exceptionally well in harsh marine environments. It's an excellent choice for fishing boats or anyone who wants zero upkeep.
Choosing the Right Style

Sizing Guidelines
For a cockpit table serving 4 people, a 24–30" round or oval top is typically sufficient. For cabin dinettes, a 36–48" rectangular top works well. When in doubt, measure the space with the table fully extended and leave at least 18" of clearance on each side for comfortable seating.
Pedestal and Mounting
Most boat tables mount on a center pedestal. An adjustable pedestal lets you raise the table for dining and lower it to convert the space into a sun pad or berth. Make sure your pedestal base is through-bolted to the deck for stability underway.
